The united AIADMK today scrapped the post of general secretary in the party. The merged party sacked VK Sasikala . The AIADMK announced that its former chief J Jayalalithaa will be the “eternal general secretary”.

The AIADMK General Council today passed resolutions that would consolidate the hold of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and O Pannerselvam on the party, and in the process, dismissing VK Sasikala from all her posts in the party.

The expulsion of VK Sasikala was one of the key demands of the faction led by Jayalalithaa loyalist O Panneerselvam.

He rebelled against the expelled General secretary earlier this year. This strife started after VK Sasikala forced him to step down from the Chief Minister’s post .

Mr Pannerselvam is now the deputy of  Chief Minister , Mr Palaniswami,  his successor. The key party post for him was seen as balancing out the comedown.

Sasikala was Jayalalithaa’s long-time live-in aide who had taken over the party chief’s post after her death in December. The decisions, however, are subject to the approval of the Madras High Court, which gave a green signal to the meeting yesterday, dismissing a petition from Sasikala loyalists to put it on hold. Eighteen lawmakers loyal to Sasikala skipped the meeting.

The party also decided that any announcements made by Sasikala’s nephew TTV Dhinakaran would not be binding on the party workers and office-bearers anymore. TTV Dhinakaran has been making an all-out effort to claw back to power. He claims to have the support 19 lawmakers and has also sided with the opposition DMK . Together they demand that Chief Minister Palaniswami to face a trust vote.

The united AIADMK says they have the support of nine lawmakers from the Dhinakaran camp. Hence have a majority figure of 124.

The AIADMK also vowed that it would now begin the fight with the Election Commission to bring back the party symbol – the two leaves, after it was taken away during the split that occured between the two factions of the party.
