India has officially started its journey to the most prestigious awards worldwide for motion pictures. Yes, you guessed it right, India makes it to the Oscar race for the best foreign language film entry, finally.
The Film Federation Of India (FFI), in an official statement on Friday, confirmed the nomination of ‘Newton’.
The Hindi movie was the unanimous choice of FFI’s selection committee. Telugu producer C V Reddy was the selection chief. ‘Newton’ is India’s official entry to the Oscars. It was the unanimous choice from 26 entries this year.” FFI secretary general Supran Sen also confirms.
The National Award-winning actor Rajkummar Rao plays the lead in this political satire. The film also stars Anjali Patil, Pankaj Tripathi and veteran thespian Raghubir Yadav of ‘Mungeri Lal’ fame.
‘Newton’ narrates the story of a rookie government clerk. On election duty, he is posted to a Naxal-controlled town in Chhattisgarh.
“Very happy to share this news that #NEWTON is India’s official entry to the #OSCARS this year. Congratulations team,” Rajkummar wrote.
“It is a really honest film and we are already getting an overwhelming response. We will put all our energies to take the film forward,” Rajkummar also shares his happiness.
Director Amit V Masurkar also added that it was a double celebration for the team. Meanwhile ‘Newton’ hits the screens today and with its release, it has got rave reviews from the top personalities in the industry.
“Newton is India’s entry to the Oscars. The best choice in years by the federation,” Hansal Mehta tweeted.
He added: “If films like A Separation and Children of Heaven made it to the Oscar nominations so can Newton. It is our best shot. Manish Mundra go for it!”
The 90th Academy Awards, presented by Jimmy Kimmel, will take place on March 4, 2018, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.
