After PAN and mobile phone numbers, Aadhaar may well be mandatory for driving licenses.

Union minister for electronics and information technology Ravi Shankar Prasad hinted at the possibility at a conference today.
Prasad, while speaking at Digital Haryana Summit 2017, said “Aadhaar is a digital identity not a physical identity. Digital identity confirms physical identity. We linked PAN card to Aadhaar to stop money laundering.” The minister didn’t give a time frame to link the unique identification number with driver’s licences. His comment though comes even as the Supreme Court has yet to rule on whether Aadhaar violates privacy.

Meanwhile the Centre’s plan to make Aadhaar mandatory for all driving license may happen next month, according to a report. Previously the Centre told the Supreme Court it will extend the deadline for mandatory Aadhaar to avail social benefits to December 31 from the earlier September 30.
This initiative is to curb people from having multiple driving licences for a single name. Currently, miscreants use multiple licences to break the law, they have a secondary licences that acts as a backup. Also, multiple licences create the menace of fake identities as well.
The Union road transport ministry has already started work to roll out the measure. The National Informatics Centre has uploaded most of the data available in RTOs across the country on to its database. This database can be accessed anytime by any RTO official to check whether the applicant already has a driving license issued in some other state.
According to a census data, more than 18 crores driving licenses have been issues in the country.
